The damage could be emotional, physical or mental stress, depending on the cause of the stress. This is a good sign you need to take time off.
Most stress are work related, while some are ignited by social influences, which inadvertently eat into the work space.
Signs of stress may include: unprovoked anger, stuttering, sleeping on the job, being highly irritable, dropping the ball etc.
Stress is good when it gets a good level of adrenaline flowing, but always observe when you are struggling to maintain altitude by doing more than necessary, before you arrive at a burnout state.
